    Subject: Winter School in Fashion Design

    Duration: 2 weeks

    Dates: 29 January to 9 February 2018

    Language: English B2 level

    Credits: Equivalent to 5 ECTS. Upon completion, you will receive a course certificate documenting your acquired skills.

    Academic level: Bachelor level

    Prerequisites: This programme is relevant for international students with skills in film, fashion, art, architecture or communication at a BA level. Only international students are eligible for application. Applicants must be at least 18 years old to apply

    Course fee: €1000. The fee includes tuition, field trips, all materials used and admission fees for day or study trips that may be part of the programme. Accommodation, meals (food and drink), insurance, visa and travelling expenses to and from Denmark are not included in the above fee.

    Application deadline: 15 December 2017. This course is dependent upon a minimum number of participants. Otherwise VIA University College reserves the right to cancel the course.

  • Content

    Through excursions to various sources of inspiration, VIA Design will introduce you to the main aspects of Nordic Furniture Design. Case studies, lectures and hands-on projects will guide you through the process and help you understand how Danish Furniture Design has developed over the years, honouring the traditions of minimalism and craftsmanship. It will inspire you to develop your own design skills in another context and introduce you to a new network.

    We will visit Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair, the world’s leading event for Scandinavian design, providing you with the opportunity to see first-hand the latest innovations in interior design and lighting for both homes and public spaces. New products, new materials, new knowledge, new trends and new environmental and technological solutions are displayed in both an informative and inspirational manner.

    You will also visit the Design Museum Denmark in Copenhagen and Aros, Aarhus Art Museum in Aarhus. Their exhibitions, archives, libraries and collections are an essential part of Denmark’s design and art heritage and an important source of inspiration for future designers.

    Teaching style
    The programme will be a combination of group work, individual exercises, lectures and workshops where you will learn how to develop a furniture concept and how to sketch. You will also acquire knowledge of idea generation methods, model-making and prepare a final presentation in the form of a portfolio.

    Student participation:
    The winter school has a high level of student involvement and includes group work, individual exercises, lectures and workshops.

    Lecturers:
    Professionals from the furniture industry will be part of the team of lecturers teaching the course.

  • Practical Information

    Accommodation
    When we receive your winter school registration, we will make all the necessary arrangements concerning accommodation. You will stay at the Hotel DGI Huset, a 3-star hotel located in the heart of Herning and the largest in the region. The hotel is known for its unique decor and abundance of indoor and outdoor facilities, including a fitness centre, spa and a spectacular aqua centre. The cost will be approx. 1000 EUR for the entire hotel stay in Herning. The price includes breakfast.

    Campus Herning
    Campus Herning is located in the city of Herning and from here you can easily travel to Denmark’s major cities within a few hours. You can take a 45-minute shuttle bus to the nearby Billund Airport, and from there you can travel to all of Europe.

    Living in Herning
    Denmark is one of the world’s safest countries, and our crime rates are low. However, you should still take the same precautions as you would in any larger European city.

    Exploring Europe
    It only takes a few hours to fly to all the major cities in Europe from Billund Airport, making Denmark a European gateway. For example, you can drive to Hamburg and take in the modern metropolis, or fly to Paris to eat croissants and visit the Eiffel Tower, ticking off the list of European destinations on your bucket list.
