    Duration of the summer school: The course runs for 30 days and each are worth 10 ECTS.

    Course period: 16 July 2017 – 16 August 2017

    Language: English

    Course fee: The course fee is 7.000 DKK. There is no fee for VIA’s own students.

  • About the course

    The Swimming Teacher Education programme is an intensive teaching programme, thus in order to pass the course full attendance is compulsory.

    On this course you will learn how to teach and plan water activities for schoolchildren. When working with water activities, it is important to know about safety in and on the water. Therefore, both first aid and safety are key elements in this course.

    The Swimming Teacher Education, which also includes kayaking and a first aid course, is aimed at students studying to become teachers or pedagogues. It is also relevant for students with an interest in sports, water activities, movement and learning.

    From the course, you will gain valuable skills and a stronger professional profile in planning and teaching water activities and swimming for schoolchildren of primary and lower secondary school age.


    • Teaching schoolchildren swimming, including the completion of the swimming instructor education
    • Teaching and carrying out basic first aid in a school
    • Teaching activities in and on the water
    • The Danish Swimming Union pool-lifeguard test
    • End-of-course exam in the different modules. 

    During the five weeks of the Swimming Teacher Education course students will carry out different water activities e.g. swimming, kayaking and first aid:

    Week 1:

    Water activities and module introduction. Water activities include basic diving practice, different swimming styles, etc.

    Week 2:

    Activities on the water – kayaking and canoeing. Presentation of the different disciplines for the end-of-course exam.

    Week 3:

    • First aid training and introduction to the pool-lifeguard exam.
    • The pool-lifeguard exam. 
    • A three days trip in a canoe/ kayak with other summer school students from the Sports Specialisation programme.

    Week 4:

    Introduction to children’s teaching and the written assignment. Start teaching and completing tests.

    Week 5:

    The last week consists of teaching children, tests and assignment writing.

    Some elements of the Swimming Teacher Education course are done in conjunction with the Sports Specialisation Programme, e.g. introduction, dinners, social activities and excursions. At the end of the course, there will be a social gathering for students from both courses.

  • How to apply

    Both Danish and international students may apply to participate in the programme.

    The Summer Schools of Swimming Teacher Education is open to students from around the world. However, you must be a student in a programme related to education.

    1 May 2017

    We will contact you immediately after the application deadline to confirm your participation in the course. 

    Payment for foreign students 

    For foreign students the course fee is 7000 DKK. 

    After you have received a confirmation, the course fee is paid through VIAPay from 1 May and until 15 May 2017 as the latest. 

    Please note which course you pay for. 

  • Practical information

    The course fee does not include food or accommodation expenses.

    The course fee is 7.000 DKK. There is no course fee for students already enrolled at a full degree programme at VIA University College.

    Expenses for food and lodgings are extra.


    You can buy your meals at the canteen on campus.

    Transport to and from Campus Aarhus C

    Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark and it is connected by train and bus to Copenhagen – Denmark’s capital. The closest airport is Tirstrup Airport, which is about 50km from Aarhus.

    VIA Campus Aarhus C is located in the heart of Aarhus, 1 kilometre from the main train station in Aarhus. There are regular busses to Campus C.

    You must arrange accommodation yourself

    All participants in the summer schools of Swimming Teacher Education and Sports Specialisation must book and pay for their own food, lodgings and transport.
