How to apply for the stand-by list

If you are not accepted into a programme this year, you have the opportunity to be placed on a stand-by list.

What is the stand-by list?

If you are not accepted into a programme this year, you have the opportunity to be placed on a stand-by list. Check the stand-by box on the application form if you are interested.

The stand-by list is a waiting list through which VIA's programmes offer study places in case there is a vacant space. The list is prioritised, which means that the vacant study places are offered to the applicants on the stand-by list according to prioritisation. Thus, you are not guaranteed a study place.

When is deadline for the stand-by list?

You must be prepared to accept a vacant study place until 21 September (for study start summer) or 21 February (for study start winter).

If you are not offered a vacant study place, your place on the stand-by list will automatically be converted to a guaranteed admission the following year.

How do I apply for stand-by?

You apply for the stand-by list by checking the box "stand-by" on the online application form. Make sure you understand the consequences of applying for the stand-by list. It might affect your application if you have applied for other programmes.

What are the consequences?

If you are placed on the stand-by list for a specific programme, you will not be eligible for admission to the other programmes prioritised lower on your application. If you are certain that you want to start your studies this year, we recommend that you do not apply for stand-by.

However, if admission to the specific study programme is more important to you, we recommend that you apply for the stand-by list.

After the deadline set by VIA University College, your place on the stand-by list will be converted to a guaranteed admission the following year. Please note that the guarantee is conditional.

Which rights and conditions apply to the stand-by list?

You can always give up your place on the list. Note, however, that once you have been offered a place on the stand-by list, you cannot be admitted to another programme this year – even if you give up your place on the list!

A place on the stand-by list will only be converted into a guarantee once the deadline has been passed. Until then, we cannot inform you whether you will be offered a study place or if your place on the list will be converted into guaranteed admission the following year.

A guarantee of admission the next year is conditional on the following:

  1. You must apply for the same programme next year
  2. You must note on your application that you have a guarantee
  3. You must attach the guarantee (letter) to your online application
  4. You must fulfil the requirements for admission for next year.

If you do not meet the above mentioned requirements, you are not guaranteed a study place on the programme the following year. A guarantee of admission is only applicable on programmes offering admission next year.
