Climate adaptation solutions

How do we prepare our cities and countries to handle the effects of climate change? In our Centre, we look at climate adaptation with a 360-degree view - combining technology, people, and nature.

Adapting to climate change

No city or country is exempt when it comes to the need to prepare for and adapt to the challenges of climate change. In Denmark, as in many other countries, one of the largest challenges is the increased amounts of water – both in terms of rising sea and groundwater levels and an increasing amount of rain.

Today, all Danish municipalities have a climate adaptation plan and work to prepare for the increasing water and energy challenges. As researchers, we work closely with public and private partners in Denmark and internationally to help develop solutions based on a deep understanding of nature to adapt to and prepare for increasing water, for example, at the same time as adding value – such as cooling, heating, and strengthened biodiversity.

We help develop solutions that simultaneously offer adaptation and mitigation of the effects of climate change – and in addition adds value to society and nature. Theis Raaschou Andersen, Head of research, Associate Professor, PhD

How we work

  • There is no one-solution-fits-all

When you look at climate adaptation, there is no one-size-fits-all. So, in our Centre you find a broad range of experts and disciplines, such as engineers, water and climate experts, biologists and urban planners.

Our projects range from permeable pavements to green roof and sponge buildings, using machine learning to predict rising sea and groundwater levels, and ‘circular city’ thinking – where cities aim to alleviate pollution and be net producers of resources rather than the opposite.

The question today is how we develop our cities and countries to be prepared and help alleviate the effects of climate change. We believe in a strong international cooperation, and we engage in several networks on EU and global levels. Climate change does not care about borders.
