VIA enters new Global Polytechnic Alliance

Global Polytechnic Alliance
The Alliance was sealed at a signing ceremony at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin, New Zealand.
Alliance will offer global opportunities in
polytechnic education to students and staff and strengthen ties to the
industry.

Humber College (Canada), Otago Polytechnic (New Zealand) and VIA University College (Denmark) signed a three-way agreement establishing the Global Polytechnic Alliance (GPA). The GPA will provide new learning and collaborative opportunities for students and staff while strengthening the understanding of the benefits of polytechnic education across the globe.

The alliance increases opportunities for students at each institution to gain international experience and develop intercultural skills. Otago Polytechnic is a global leader in indigenizing curriculum, Humber College has a strong polytechnic position, while VIA University College’s project-based learning approach and innovation in teaching is globally recognized. Students will have the opportunity to participate in three-way mobility through summer programmes, online collaboration and semesters abroad.

Applied research will strengthen ties to the industry

Beyond the classroom, collaborative research initiatives will enhance teaching and support services at the three institutions through informed practice. Applied research initiatives will strengthen ties with industry globally and the three institutions will collaborate on education consultancy services to new and emerging polytechnics globally.

The partnership will focus on:

  • The development, delivery and recognition of skills and training responsive to learner and industry needs
  • Collaborative approaches to student learning and engagement preparing them for the future world of work
  • Global educational pathways that expand access to stackable credentials
  • Projects that highlight, develop and enhance applied learning
  • Infusion of intercultural learning outcomes in all projects
  • Increasing capacity through the provision of international consulting services
  • Research to measure impact contributing to the scholarship of learning and teaching practice in global polytechnic education.

Phil Ker, Chief Executive of Otago Polytechnic, says: “Through collaboration, we will create opportunities for our students that will better prepare them for the complex changes of the 21st century. The alliance will also strengthen the reach of all members into global training and research.”

The Global Polytechnic Alliance will highlight the economic and social benefits of an education that is a blend of experiential and classroom learning at a time when the need for polytechnic education is greater than ever.

“At VIA University College, we are proud to be part of this alliance and look forward to working together to establish our institutions and polytechnic education as global players in higher education,” said Harald Mikkelsen, Rector at VIA University College and adds: “The polytechnic model of education works closely with industry to accommodate future societal needs.”
