Main purpose
Knowledge
After the course, students can:
- Describe (solo3) the industrial development through the 4 industrial revolutions.
- Describe (solo3) the connection between digitization and Industry 4.0
- Describe (solo3) the (enabling) role of digitization technologies in a production, business and industrial context
- Defines (Solo2) Digitization I4.0 technologies and lists (solo2) technologies' core characteristics, their advantages and disadvantages and historical development and maturity
Skills
After the course, students can:
- Describe (solo3) or outline (Solo3) the potential of a technology in a given context.
- Combine (solo3) new digitization technologies with existing technology.
Competences
The purpose of the course is to provide students with an understanding, a language and skillset that enable the student to participate in value-creating digitization projects.
Topics
Teaching methods and study activities
The course is structured around 12 teaching days each with 4 modules, typically a morning or afternoon. The course include online and onsite activities.
The course starts by introducing Digitization and I4.0 as concepts, as well as an introduction to the course's "case company", the pseudo-company "VIA-SmartFab".
The subsequent courses are designed around a story where students are “employees/consultants” in "VIA-SmartFab". Students participate thru the courses in a number of technology conferences and workshops with the aim of assessing the value of "new" technologies in relation to the company.
At the end of the course “VIA-SmartFab” choose one or more technologies for further investigation. Students will then, as the course-project, examine the selected technologies in more detail in a synopsis. The synopsis is the pivot point for the course exam.

Exam type:
Course evaluation is a group-based exam. First, the group presents their synopsis together (10 min), followed by a group oral exam 30 min. (including voting).
The synopsis counts for 50% and the exam counts for 50% of the final grade

The future is increasingly focusing on digitization. Students are during the DIG2 course introduced to key concepts within digitization with a focus on global industrial digitization trends, their main features, potentials and limitations.
The purpose of the course is to give students an understanding and a language that enables the student to participate in meaningful digitization projects.
