Prerequisites

For exchange students similar level of knowledge corresponding to CE-STD3 and CE-CON2 must be obtained before the start of this course.
Likewise exchange students must participate in, or have completed, the course GSA1 (Global Stability Analysis).

Main purpose

 The main purpose is to make the student able to solve ordinary current assignments in relation to post-tensioned structures.

Knowledge

After completion of the course, the student must:
– have knowledge about pre-tensioned and post tensioned concrete structures.
– be able to understand the static principles of pre-tensioned and post tensioned concrete.
– be able to understand the relevance of applying prestressed concrete opposite to reinforced concrete.
– be able to understand causes and significance of loss of prestress in prestressed concrete structures

Skills

After completing the course the student must:
–   be able to apply methods to design prestressed concretes structures in the serviceability and ultimate limit state.
–  be able to quantify loss of stress in the tendons and estimate the significance of this.

Competences

 After completion of the course, the student must be able to use knowledge and skill within all subject areas to plan and make relevant choices of techniques and theories in order to solve structural design project.

Topics

 

Teaching methods and study activities

The course is scheduled for 14 weeks with 4 lectures each week. Workload for the students corresponds to 138-hour.
The activities of the course are lectures of theory, assignments followed by presentations by students, eventually workshops.
 
Student Activity Model
Category 1: 35%, ~ 48 hours:.(Participation of lecturer and students, Initiated by the lecturer): Lessons, scheduled, Excursions, Project guidance, Laboratory work, Exams and tests
Category 2: 65% ~ 90 hours: (Participation of students, Initiated by the lecturer): Assignments, self-study, Project and group work, Homework and preparation for exams, Evaluation of the teaching

– Lecture notes about prestressed concrete structures  based on notes from former lecturer Søren Kloch, University of Aalborg -  with alterations and translation by  lecturer Pauli Andreasen, VIA UC. These notes are available at Itslearning. 
– Presentations for the lectures by Pauli Andreasen (Itslearning).
Supplementary literature:
– The student must bring his own textbook about the design of reinforced concrete according to Eurocode 2, part 1-1.

Evaluation

Examination

Prerequisites:
All course assignments must be duly handed in in order to register for exam. Course assignments must be uploaded to Itslearing during the semester and to WiseFlow at  give deadlines.
 
Type of examination:
Oral Exam with an external examiner.
20 minutes per student in total incl. grading.
The exam will be based on course assignments solved and handed in to given deadlines during the semester.
There is no preparation time before the exam.
On the exam day, there will be a draw between the subjects covered by the course assignments. Several course assignment may enter into the drawn subject.
 
Allowed tools:
It is allowed to bring the assignments to the examination. 
 
Re-exams:
Oral exam using the same method as the ordinary exam.

Grading criteria

Grading according to the Danish 7-grade-scale.
Examinations account for  100 % of final grade.
