The Danish Foundation for Entrepreneurship has chosen VIA University College as Denmark’s most entrepreneurial institution of higher education.

The prize as the leading entrepreneurial institution 2018 was awarded at the yearly competition for student entrepreneurship organised by the Danish Foundation for Entrepreneurship in cooperation with the Danish Chamber of Commerce.

In awarding the prize to VIA, it was stressed that VIA works strategically with entrepreneurship and innovation in all of its 42 educational programmes, including programmes that are traditionally not focused on developing students in this area.

The jury also emphasised that VIA has put specific efforts into integrating entrepreneurship in the general curricula for the more than 19,000 students and not as a separate activity.

Rector Harald Mikkelsen accepted the award on behalf of VIA.

“We are really proud and grateful for the recognition of our efforts in developing students’ entrepreneurial skills. Our goal is to educate candidates who are able to participate with innovation of the public and private sectors,” Harald Mikkelsen said.

He added that the role of higher educational institutions such as VIA is to teach students how to cooperate with public and private companies in developing new products and methods that can support growth and help find solutions to societal challenges.

Part of VIAs strategy

The effort to build and strengthen an entrepreneurial culture among students and faculty is part of VIA's strategy. For example, faculty members have been trained to teach courses in entrepreneurship.
In addition, VIA offers special electives and courses on entrepreneurship. And VIA has established student entrepreneurship centres on most campusses. One specific goal is that more students establish their own companies – which more and more students across programmes do.

In addition, VIA participates in a number of EU-funded development projects in the area of student entrepreneurship and innovation.
