VIA named the most entrepreneurial for the third time

For the third time in five years, VIA has been named Entrepreneurial Educational Institution of the Year. In the middle is Erik Løvgren Brejner (L), head of entrepreneurship, business relations and student incubators at VIA, and rector Harald Mikkelsen (R).

In 2014, 2018 and now again in 2019, the Danish Foundation for Entrepreneurship has awarded VIA University College the Entrepreneurial Educational Institution of the Year Award.

For the third time, VIA University College has been named the Entrepreneurial Educational Institution of the Year.

The honour is an acknowledgment of VIA’s focus on making innovation and entrepreneurship part of the students’ DNA on all of VIA’s more than 40 different professional bachelor programmes, and “entrepreneurship” being a key word in VIA's student incubator and overall strategy.

The Danish Foundation for Entrepreneurship has awarded VIA the Entrepreneurial Educational Institution of the Year award for 2019. The same honour was bestowed on VIA in 2014 and 2018.

Re-organisation means a significant role for entrepreneurship
That VIA has once again been named Entrepreneurial Educational Institution of the Year this year is due to its re-organisation, which came into force in January 2019 and places even more emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship, according to the Danish Foundation for Entrepreneurship.

For example, VIA has established a new Research Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The Danish Foundation for Entrepreneurship also emphasises in its reasoning that VIA uses resources to develop new educational programmes, subjects and electives focusing on entrepreneurship; that it has won awards for entrepreneurial research and that it insists on its teaching staff undergoing continual professional development in innovation and entrepreneurship.
Likewise, the Danish Foundation for Entrepreneurship points out that VIA’s student incubator supports the students’ opportunities for starting their own businesses and developing innovative products. This happens as part of VIA’s talent initiative.

In the motivation for again awarding VIA the title of Entrepreneurial Educational Institution of the Year, it also states: “With a 360-degree review of their entrepreneurial portfolio, VIA has ensured a strong, strategic focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. This means that with its latest organisational change and strategy, VIA has ensured and strengthened the importance of entrepreneurship as an integral part of VIA’s existence—at a time when others in the political sphere are not always focusing on entrepreneurship ... With VIA’s holistic focus on entrepreneurship, no one doubts that VIA wants to be a central player in an innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystem that safeguards all of VIA’s students getting the opportunity to realise their potential and contribute to Denmark’s future”.

Rector sees the prize as honouring and recognising all of VIA

VIA’s rector, Harald Mikkelsen, is once again delighted with the award as Entrepreneurial Educational Institution of the Year, which was presented at an event at the Danish Foundation for Entrepreneurship on 29 May 2019.

“We have huge ambitions at VIA in relation to equipping our students with a mind-set that integrates innovation and entrepreneurship. Therefore, it is a great honour that our efforts in the area are being seen and recognised. The Danish Foundation for Entrepreneurship’s award is a mark of recognition for the entirety of VIA’s organisation, where all employees contribute to the goal of making innovation and entrepreneurship a part of the students’ DNA. I am very grateful,” stresses Harald Mikkelsen.

Climate and health care need an entrepreneurial mind-set
Erik Løvgren Brejner, head of business relations, entrepreneurship and student incubators at VIA, emphasises that an entrepreneurial mind-set is equally as important whether you work within the health service or at a school or you are an engineer and have to, for example, construct bridges or come up with climate solutions.

Therefore, it is of paramount importance for VIA that entrepreneurship is a firm and obligatory part of both public- and private-orientated educational programmes.

“Innovation and entrepreneurship are about much more than starting new businesses. Entrepreneurship is about improving workflows, strengthening forms of collaboration, developing service, adapting products and much, much more. Therefore, it makes a lot of sense to make entrepreneurship part of the culture of all educational programmes,” states Erik Løvgren Brejner and continues:

“In VIA, we aim to equip our students to be able to think outside of the box, see new opportunities and have top skills to develop their professions when they enter the labour market. The challenges of the future, both in private companies and public organisations, call for entrepreneurial employees and innovative entrepreneurs, who, besides being skilled professionals, can think creatively and find new paths to follow.”
