Patricia, Exchange student at VIA

Why Denmark and VIA?

I am studying Childhood Pedagogy at my home university in Kiel, Germany. I chose Nature in Social Education at VIA because I want to work outdoors and the programme sounded perfect for me. Afterwards, I took a second semester at VIA at the Social Work in Context of Conflict and Disasters programme. Both programmes were super interesting and I have learnt a lot that will help me in my future career. I grew so much in this year. Also, I just really like Scandinavia!

What is the teaching style like?

The teaching style much more personal. The teachers were super engaged and interested in teaching us internationals. They were also interested in us as persons. It was so interesting to experience the Danish way of teaching.

What has been the largest experience and challenge for you?

The biggest experiences for me were, how much I changed and learnt about myself in this year, even though I was already 26. Also, we travelled to Norway and Swedish Lappland in winter which were great experiences as well. Danish student life has also been great – check out the annual regatta for students “Kapsejladsen”, if you come to Aarhus…and of course the famous Friday bars and just the relaxed and happy Danish lifestyle.

The biggest challenge for me was homesickness and that I sometimes felt lonely. Then I took some time for myself or I spent time with friends to make me feel better.

What were the first few weeks in Denmark like?

Exciting! Everything and everyone are new. Together with my classmates, we discovered Aarhus and I also found a basketball team that I got to spend a lot of time with. Eventually, my team mates became my friends. Joining a sports team or a club is a great way of meeting new friends.

What did you learn during your exchange?

I got better in Danish. I learnt to say ‘no’ to activities and to overcome the fear of missing out. I became more open to different nationalities.

Academically, I learnt new methods to do a presentation and to become more relaxed when it comes to preparation. Also, I got new perspectives on my academic field.

My advice

Do it!!! It’s a great opportunity! Be open to cycle everywhere and to the weather. Be aware: there is no bad weather, there are only bad clothes
