From Latvia to the Danish offshore wind industry: Paloma’s journey

Meet Paloma Krastina. At just 18, Paloma left her home in Latvia and moved to Denmark to study Global Business engineering at VIA. Today, at 24, she works as a Technical Customer Agent at Danish offshore wind giant Vestas.

“It has been an exciting and great journey for me. At first, it was a bit tough to move my whole life to a new country and adapt, especially during covid, when the opportunities to socialise were limited. But that also pushed me through a fantastic self-development journey,” says Paloma and ads that both VIA and Danish authorities made the transition to her new home quite smooth by offering free Danish classes, intro days, weekly Friday bars and guidance in general.

Engineering with a commercial edge

At her last year of high school, Paloma started to research universities and programmes. “I knew for sure I wanted to connect my life with engineering, understand how things work, study mechanics, etc. But all the programmes I found lacked a “commercial” edge – teaching you how to plan your projects, pitch your ideas, think strategically, analyse your market and put yourself in your end-customer’s shoes - until I found Global Business Engineering. I applied immediately and knew it was right for me, for my personality. And don’t regret it!”

Paloma started her Global Business Engineering studies specialising in mechanical technology at VIA in Horsens in the summer of 2020 and graduated in 2025.

A career in green energy

Today, Paloma is working as a Technical Customer Agent at Danish wind turbine company Vestas in the offshore department, working directly with customers in the Northern and Central Europe region.

“I serve as a customer interface for all the technical queries our offshore customers raise. Since wind turbines are extremely complex machines, Vestas has specialists for every part and component. I talk daily to a wide network of all these specialists across the organisation – and when a customer has a technical question or needs an explanation or a clarification – It’s me who reaches out internally, gets a response, and answers in a customer-friendly way on behalf of Vestas.”

Paloma finds that her work tasks very much reflect with what she learnt during her GBE studies – Technical and commercial at the same time.

Building a sustainable career

Working in renewable energy was a natural choice for Paloma. “When you travel around Denmark, you see wind turbines everywhere – both on- and offshore. And it looked super inspiring to me.”

So, at her 3rd year of studying she applied for a student worker position at Vestas and got it. Later, she also did her mandatory 8th semester internship at the company – as well as writing her bachelor’s project in collaboration with and about the company.

“For 1.5 years, I managed to test and develop my skills in 3 different teams across the company. It was like my own “mini graduate programme” with rotations.” Eventually, about 4 months after graduation, Paloma landed a permanent position at Vestas.

Paloma on life in Denmark
I couldn’t be happier in Denmark and in my job – great work-life balance, I feel productive and at the same time don’t burn out from work, because I have enough time for myself and my hobbies. For now, I’m planning to develop in my role and stay in wind. I like my life in Denmark, but if my career opens some opportunities for me abroad, I am open to explore them, too”
