Denmark has a long tradition of using nature and other outdoor facilities as supplemental alternatives to classrooms and institutions in different situations. During this summer school, students will be guided through the many facets of using the outdoors in teaching, guiding, supporting, developing and educating people

    Subject: Outdoor Learning and Outdoor Education in a Nordic Context

    Duration: 5 weeks

    Dates: 25 June – 30 July 2018 (online from 25 June – 2 July)

    Credits: 10 ECTS

    Academic level: Bachelor level

    Prerequisites: 1 years of studies at a higher educational institution

    Maximum enrolment: Maximum 20 participants. If there are more eligible applicants than available seats, they will be distributed according to first-come, first served basis.

  • Content

    Outdoor activities is the focus of this course. Denmark and the Nordic countries has a long tradition for outdoor activities. In this course we will explore the professional possibilities when working with and in the outdoors

    The purpose of the course is to experience and work in natural and other outdoor surroundings in order to investigate the professional possibilities within the outdoor environment. 


    • Introduction: concepts of nature, facts and figures and workshops describing various angles on outdoor education and outdoor learning and an overview of research
    • Nature and physical health
    • Nature and mental health
    • The outdoors and citizens with dementia and disability in nursing homes
    • The outdoors and citizens with developmental disabilities in daycare
    • Nature, art and philosophy
    • Sustainability, environment and engagement
    • A place and its possibilities
    • Project work and presentation


    Activities during the summer school:

    • Experiences and reflections on being or becoming a mindful and active person in nature.
    • Discussion of theoretical positions and ideas on outdoor education and outdoor learning
    • Bonfire and activities around the fire
    • Live role-play within nature environments and opportunities for learning (e.g. the history of the Vikings) 
    • Land art activities as a part of social activities
    • Carving activities
    • Primitive clay pottery
    • Nature’s pantry: collecting and preparing food from nature
    • Rehabilitation – yoga and presence as a part of outdoor activities.
  • Tuition and fees

    Accommodation, meals, insurance, visa and travelling expenses are not included in the fee

    All students = 7000 DKK (app. 950 EUR).

    Tuition fee waiver:
    Students from VIA, students from VIA’s partners or students from other Danish educational institutions can participate free of charge if they can provide proof of credit transfer into their own study programme.

    Accommodation, meals (food and drink), insurance, visa and travelling expenses to and from Denmark are not included in the fee.

    Note: This course is offered as a part of the Bachelor in Social Education. Seats available after allocating seats to credit-transfer students from VIA University College, Danish Higher Educational Institutions and partner institutions are offered under the Empty-place Scheme and the rules of Danish Open University.
