Diego started over in Denmark by studying Climate and Supply Engineering

40-year-old Diego from Argentina has taken the first steps into a new career path in Denmark by studying Climate and Supply Engineering at VIA in Horsens.

Diego Perez

My name is Diego, from Argentina and I am currently 3rd semester at the Climate and Supply Engineering programme. I chose this program to learn about climate change mitigation actions and be able to give something back to this beautiful world we live in, by helping new developments to be as sustainable as possible. At first, I thought this programme was all about climate, climate change etc., but it is also about supply/utility lines, and how to make a sustainable project protecting the environment.

I was living in Denmark before starting at VIA, and the possibilities this country gives to foreigners are just incredible, like for example being able to study for free - and of course, security, equality and open-minded citizens made this decision pretty easy. I am 40 years old, and this country and VIA have opened a new world of possibilities to me. I never thought about starting a career at my age, but VIA made it possible - I will be eternally grateful.

New ways of learning

I really enjoy working with the software tools provided at the programme, such as Mike Urban, Road design and of course QGIS, as well as the many applications to have better perspectives and make a correct project.

I also participated in projects with VIA and the local municipality, working on real life problems, and this gives us an amazing opportunity to apply all the knowledge we are getting at the programme – I really love this!

However, the emphasis on working in groups was a challenge for me in the beginning and very different to what we do in Argentina, but with good guidance from teachers and tutors, I now think this is the best way to learn. To discuss and be able to listen and respect others’ opinions - for me this is the key to make an excellent engineer. I need to remark how helpful and supportive VIA is with international students - teachers and counsellors will do everything to help you and make your integration very smooth.

Inclusive and welcoming study environment

When I first started my studies here, I was afraid of how my fellow students would feel about me, because I am older than most of them, but they were so welcoming and respectful. Now I have amazing new friends that make me feel like an equal. It is never too late!

All the social activities on campus, workshops, clubs and so on really blew my mind! This gives a lot of different options for different people and is very inclusive. Facilities are amazing, everything has been made for students, and cover all we need to have an amazing student experience.

The possibility of collaborating with VIA as tutor, ambassador or being part of events like Climate Day, make the student life incredible and way more interesting than I thought.  I also took part in a summer school in Sweden for a week, representing VIA, and it was an unforgettable experience.

Hopes for the future

I have a wonderful family here now, so my plans are, once a finish my education, to work in an engineering consultancy company here in Denmark or the public sector, mostly trying to enhance and protect biodiversity by working with sustainable developments.
