Why Denmark and VIA?

I'm studying Civil Engineering at my home university, the University of Applied Sciences in Augsburg, Germany. At VIA I am also studying Civil Engineering. There are different subjects and approaches to solving problems in this professional field, which is why I decided to spend a semester abroad.

I chose Denmark because I have only heard good things from people who have already been there. The positive testimonials from former students were also encouraged be to make this choice.

The best thing about living here in Denmark is that I live right by the sea and I can enjoy my free time by the sea or in nature.

What is the teaching style like?

The teaching style is completely different from what I am used to at home. At VIA, it is more a problem-based teaching style, and you must solve the problems in teams. At my home university most of the time it is classroom teaching, and you have to write a big exam paper in the end.

What has been the largest challenge for you?

The biggest challenge in going abroad was to make the decision. After that everything went smoothly and I got well supported from my home university and of course from VIA. I’m now in the middle of my semester abroad and my greatest experience so far is the many open and friendly people I have met and with whom I can enjoy my time in Denmark.

What is the best thing about living and studying in Denmark?

Arriving in Denmark and at VIA was great, everyone welcomed me openly and we were introduced well. There is a lot of welcome events offered at VIA, but also the city of Horsens cares a lot about new people and supports them very much.

The best thing about living here in Denmark is that I live right by the sea and I can enjoy my free time by the sea or in nature. The friendly people here are always ready to help, if you are open to it and them.

My advice

My advice to someone who is considering doing an exchange in Denmark is to have good rain clothing and just do it, because it is worth it and a great experience.
