Lasse was exchange student at The Fashion Experience - Film and Transmedia Storytelling

According to Lasse Lyskjær Noer the best commercials contain a story that moves us. He was exchange student at The Fashion Experience – Film and Transmedia Storytelling at VIA.

Lasse Noer is an exchange student at the programme The Fashion Experience – Film and Transmedia Storytelling.

Lasse Noer wanted to be creative, to learn the theory and to mould his own education. This made him choose the exchange programme at VIA Film & Transmedia.

“As a child I thought my future career would be as a professional soccer player - like almost every other boy. But then at home we had an old video camera, and me and my friends from school started making funny videos. That was the beginning for me,” Lasse says with a great laugh.

The old dream of being a soccer player did not come true, but his new dream of becoming a filmmaker did.

“Working with moving images takes a lot of practice and hard work, but it is fun.”

Lasse comes from Denmark and is an exchange student from the Danish programme Multiplatform Storytelling and Production at VIA University College.

What the clients want

One of the things he found most interesting on the exchange programme is the time he spent with clients, trying to figure out what they want.

He explains that knowing what clients want and how they think is an important part of his education. Also, if the clients’ wishes compromise his own creative ideas.

In fashion film there is almost no limits and you are allowed to do as you like, as long as the client approves. Clients do not always know what they want, so it is your job to convince them that your idea is right for them

Lasse now has a toolbox

Another thing Lasse takes with him from the exchange programme is the way to segment and to work professionally with target audiences.

These tools are given to them by the many skilled lecturers and guest lecturers throughout the semester.

“Our guest lecturers are brought in from the industry, and bring with them lots of updated and relevant input and advice” Lasse adds.

A wider audience

Lasse has a special reason for studying fashion film:

Normally, I make short films, but short films have a narrow and limited audience. Viewers have to make the choice to watch a short film. Commercials and fashion films reach a wider audience than short films do and have a different impact. I think that the best commercials contain a story that moves people in some way

He laughs and adds "I am a story person."

Lasse's advice for other students:

  • Make lots of films. For every film you make you will get better, and it takes time and practice to make the good stuff
  • Do not only think in one film genre or format
  • Bring your heart into it. It has to be important for you, and the audience must be able to see your personality.
