Meet Mark Alexandru Costin-Sebestian

Mark from Romania is studying Architectural Technology and Construction Management at VIA, because he wants to create and develop homes and social constructions for people to enjoy in the future – hopefully in a Danish company. Meet him and find out what his experience has been like here!

Mark Alexandru, ATCM student at VIA in Denmark

Why Denmark?

I chose to study ATCM because the profession just fit my lifestyle like a glove – being able to create and develop homes and social constructions for people to enjoy was something that I always dreamt of doing.

I chose to study in Denmark because it was a 180 degree turn from the style of teaching that I was used to back home. Danish education is focused around group-work and it constantly challenges you to evolve as a professional. You actually learn by working, not by memorising, which was the biggest factor for me.

What surprised you about studying in Denmark?

The thing that surprised me the most regarding studying in Denmark is how friendly and open the teachers are. They always joke around, never let you call them “teachers” – you have to address them by their first name – which left me speechless, compared to what I was used to back home. Also, having a Friday bar in the campus canteen is pretty crazy.

The multi-cultural experiences, meeting people from all over the world, learning in English, as well as the ability to sustain yourself while studying is one of the best things you can ever do for yourself. Mark Alexandru Costin-Sebestian

What was the biggest challenge and experience?

The biggest challenge was adapting to living by myself. Most of the people that come to VIA are coming fresh out of highschool or after a gap year, which usually means they have never lived by themselves – which comes with some challenges.

The biggest experience I would say is being able to interact with people from every corner of the world – experiencing how they think, their cuisines and their cultures is something that will leave you with great memories.

What is the best thing about living and studying in Denmark and at VIA?

The best thing about living in Denmark is the amazing social systems they have in place, how everything here is digital and really easy to access and use. Also, education and healthcare being free helps quite a lot. Of course, we pay pretty high taxes – but at the end of the day, they’re totally worth it.

My advice

My advice for someone who is considering coming to Denmark is not to think too much about it. I can ensure that it will be one of the most life-turning decisions. The multi-cultural experiences, meeting people from all over the world, learning in English, as well as the ability to sustain yourself while studying is one of the best things you can ever do for yourself.
