Coding, Culture and Campus Life: A Student’s Experience at VIA

Meet Richard – a third-semester Software Technology Engineering student at VIA University College. Originally from Hungary, Richard chose Denmark for its balance of academic quality, cultural richness, and everyday life – and he hasn’t looked back since.

“I’ve been into programming since primary school,” Richard shares. “It’s always been a part of my life, so choosing software engineering felt natural. But I also wanted to explore new places and cultures – and Denmark stood out as the perfect choice.”

Why VIA?

When searching for universities in Denmark, VIA caught Richard’s attention. “It’s close to Aarhus, which is a vibrant city, but the campus itself is peaceful. You can find quiet spots in parks or even by the beach – perfect for recharging.”

VIA’s practical approach to learning was a big draw. “I wanted hands-on experience, not just theory. At VIA, the focus is on applying what you learn – especially through project work. Every semester ends with a group project where you bring together everything you’ve learned throughout the semester. It’s incredibly rewarding.”

Lastly, Richard highlights the teachers at VIA: “They are amazing – they’re experienced, but also super approachable. We call them by their first names, and it feels more like learning from a mentor than being lectured. You really look up to them.”

Learning that stays relevant

One thing Richard finds unique is the way exams are structured at VIA. “Most exams are oral, which means you’re tested on how well you understand and explain things – not just memorise facts. Plus, the courses are updated regularly to match industry standards, so we’re always learning relevant skills.”

His favourite subject? Programming (PRO). “In the first semesters, we dive into Java – great for beginners but also taught in a way that prepares you for real-world company environments. Later on, we explore other programming languages and build on what we’ve learned.”

Life outside the classroom

VIA offers flexibility, which means students can balance studies with work, hobbies, and social life. “Classes usually finish by 4 pm, so there’s time to work, hang out with friends, or join student activities. I recently joined a dance class that’s growing every semester!”

There is also plenty of support for student initiatives. “You can book rooms for almost any activity – there’s even a music room and facilities for 3D printing. Students can put up posters to promote their events, and the campus staff are always supportive.”

Preparing for the Future

Although Richard hasn’t started his internship yet, he’s excited about the opportunity. “VIA dedicates a whole semester to internships, and they help you get ready for it. There’s even a ‘Company Dating’ event where you can meet potential employers right on campus.”

Looking ahead, Richard dreams of working in software development, focusing on applications, testing, and management. “I’m considering staying in Denmark for my Master’s and maybe even settling here – but who knows what the future holds?”
