Prerequisites

The admission requirements for exchange students

Main purpose

The purpose of this course is to consolidate and develop the English oral proficiency of the students.

Knowledge

After the course the student should be able to:
  • identify aspects of the English language necessary for successful communication, including syn-tax, phonetics, grammar and semantics corresponding to the intermediate level.

Skills

After the course the student should be able to:
  • Use the language effectively and confidently in most situations with noticeable lapses in accuracy, fluency, appropriateness and organisation
  • Read and comprehend authentic texts in English about general or academic subjects and account for their contents
  • Give a well-structured oral summary of a given text
  • Take an active part in discussions and be able to account for his/her views
  • Make well-structured oral presentations in English on subjects related to his/her field of interest.
 

Competences

  • The student should gain competences in applying the oral language skills acquired during the course so as to be able – to a certain extent - to interact fluently and spontaneously with native and non-native English speakers alike in a university or professional environment.

Teaching methods and study activities

12 weeks of four lessons, equivalent to 137.5 hours of work for the student.
Class-based tuition, grammar lessons, discussions, debates and presentations.

Evaluation

Permit criteria for attending examination:
  • Mandatory course activities completed
  • Two tests during the course passed.

Oral Examination
 
Individual oral examination based upon a subject found by draw.
 
Preparation time 20 minutes.
