Med specialiseringen i XR bliver du ekspert i udviklingen inden for både Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) og Mixed Reality (MR). Enrolment and admission requirements

To be enrolled in the Software Technology Engineering specialised in XR study programme, you must fulfil the admission requirements. Applicants with foreign diplomas must apply by 15 March.

    Specific admission requirements

    In addition to the admission requirements, all applicants must also meet the following specific admission requirements:

    • Mathematics equivalent to a Danish A-level
    • Physics equivalent to a Danish B-level or Geoscience equivalent to a Danish A-level
    • English equivalent to a Danish B-level 

    Information about the specific admission requirements

    A Mathematics A-level is 375 instructional hours of 60 minutes each.

    A Physics B-level is 190 instructional hours of 60 minutes each.

    A Geoscience A-level is 375 instructional hours of 60 minutes each.

    An English B-level is 210 instructional hours of 60 minutes each.

    Each of the subjects above must be passed with a min. average of 2.0 on the Danish grading scale.

    Non-Danish applicants must include a copy of the original exam certificate and a transcript of records plus a state-authorised translation of their transcript of records in either Danish or English.

    Important to know about the assessment of your application

    Applications received before deadline (15 March, 12 noon) will be assessed by the means of the following criteria:

    • Motivational video - learn more about the requirements for the motivational video here.
    • Exam results from your Upper Secondary School 
    • Grade point average of Mathematics equivalent to a Danish A level and English equivalent to a Danish B level
    • Relevant work experience, e.g. IT-Supporter. Please upload CV - one pager and Employers Declaration at optagelse.dk 
    • Other relevant documented qualifications e.g. Elite sports, volunteer work and the like

    This is why it is very important that you upload all possible relevant documentation with your application before deadline, also if you do not graduate until summer the given year.

    Qualified applicants may be called for a personal interview.

    Verification form

    Important information: Applicants with non-Danish entry qualifications need to fill in a verification form to verify the total number of hours of instruction of the subjects needed for the study programme (specific admission requirements). The total hours of instruction must be obtained during the final three years of upper secondary school. 

    To be accepted, the verification form must be stamped and signed by your upper secondary school.

    Applicants with non-Danish entry qualifications must ensure that the mathematics topics listed in the math syllabus were included in their previous studies.

    Appeal – due to legal matters

    You can file a complaint with the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science, if the complaint concerns legal matters related to your decision. The deadline for submitting a complaint is 2 weeks from the day the decision is informed.

    This means that you can complain, if you believe the decision violates applicable laws, such as the Public Administration Act, the Act on Gender Equality, and general principles of administrative law. You cannot complain about academic assessments and specific judgements.

    If you still believe the decision violates applicable laws, you must send your complaint to VIA University College at apply@via.dk, no later than 2 weeks after the decision is informed. If the case is not reopened, VIA will forward the entire case to the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science.

    If you do not fulfil the entry requirements but have other professional qualifications that may be equivalent to the missing entry requirements, you can apply for admission with special permission. Read more here.

Student life

The Software Technology Engineering specialised in XR programme is a professional bachelor's degree combining theory and practise closely. Over the course of your education, you will gain detailed knowledge of what working in the industry means - whether you plan on working with single user systems, machine learning or Internet-of-Things. 

  • Under uddannelsen til softwareingeniør har du løbende fag, som klæder dig på inden for den ingeniørfaglige verden og du opbygger en bred portefølje af kompetencer, som kan bruges i mange forskellige retninger. Samtidig opnår du specialiseret viden gennem fag, der er direkte rettet mod softwareudvikling og -teknologi. 


    Desuden, har vi på tværs af alle vores uddannelsesretninger på VIAs ingeniøruddannelser et gennemgående fokus på bæredygtighed, digitalisering og innovation samt entreprenørskab. Det vil være grundlæggende elementer, som vi arbejder aktivt med gennem hele uddannelsen og som indgår som en naturlig del af undervisning, semesterprojekter og praktik. 

    Nyeste teknologi og udstyr 
    Med en specialisering i XR-teknologier får du hands-on erfaring med den nyeste udvikling inden for Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) og Mixed Reality (MR). Du lærer at udvikle XR-løsninger til både spil, interaktive oplevelser og avancerede simulationer, der fx kan bruges i undervisning, træning eller problemløsning i praksis. 

    Uddannelse tæt på branchen 
    XR-specialiseringen foregår i samarbejde med The Animation Workshop (TAW), der er blandt de bedste i verden inden for computeranimation. Se mere om TAW her.   

    Uddannelsens opbygning 
    De første fire semestre er bygget op omkring forskellige temaer.  

    1. semester: PC-spil 
    2. semester: Mobilapplikationer
    3. semester: Industriel XR
    4. semester: Multiplayer netværksspil

    På femte semester skal du i praktik, og på sjette og syvende semester har du både obligatoriske fag og valgfag, hvor du får mulighed for at specialisere dig i den retning, der interesserer dig.

  • SPL – Spiludvikling 1, 2 og 3  

    På kurserne lærer du at bruge Game Engines og hvordan spilmotorer fungerer, samt hvordan man takler tekniske udfordringer som udvikler. Du får viden om fundamentale emner inden for spiludvikling og real-time applikationer. Vi vil komme til at diskutere samt implementere forskellige gameplay features. Derudover lærer du at analysere, designe, dokumentere og implementere et distribueret system herunder opnå forståelse for fordele og ulemper ved en distribueret arkitektur. 

    DAP1 – Digital Animationsproduktion 
    Det er vigtigt som spiludvikler at forstå grundlæggende emner så som polygoner, teksturer samt belysning af traditionelt 3D grafik.  Kurset vil omhandle værktøjer, som anvendes i industrien til modellering og animation. Du får en introduktion i at konstruere og modellere 2D og 3D animation, samt hvordan vi bruger dem i spil. 

    OOP1 – Softwareudvikling med UML og C# 
    På kurset bliver du trænet i objektorienteret programmering i C#, så du bliver i stand til at konstruere programmer, samt analysere og designe UML diagrammer, så det bliver nemmere at indgå i samarbejde på softwareudviklingsprojekter.  

    SWE1 – Softwareudvikling og processer 
    På dette kursus lærer du at anvende softwareingeniørkoncepter, der bruges til at udvikle objektorienteret software, herunder at strukturere softwareudviklingsprocessen ved at anvende Scrum og Unified Process (UP) til at gennemføre analyse, design og testbeskrivelser for at eksemplificere en endelig løsning fra et virkeligt problem. Dette involverer indsamling af krav (Use Cases og ikke-funktionelle krav), samt at udarbejde domænemodeller, interaktionsdiagrammer, designklassediagrammer, designmønstre, testbeskrivelser. 

    WWW1 – Webudvikling 1 
    Kurset introducerer dig til de grundlæggende web-teknologier HTML, CSS og JavaScript herunder standarder og værktøjer til grundlæggende web-programmering. Du bliver introduceret til anvendelse af de grundlæggende web-teknologier sammen med WebGL  Kurset introducerer dig også til moderne programmeringssprog, framework og teknologier, der anvendes ved udvikling af webapplikationer, ligesom Games Engines til webapplikationer introduceres. Der ses på programmeringsparadigmer og principperne fra de anvendte frameworks og værktøjer.

    MSU1 - Matematik for Spiludviklere
    Kurset giver grundlæggende viden om lineær algebra og dens anvendelser, så det bliver muligt ikke kun at forstå, men også at anvende lineær algebra til løsning af praktiske tekniske problemer. Færdigheder i lineær algebra er af stor betydning, når man beskæftiger sig med scientific computing, billedbehandlingsgrafik, robotteknologi, algoritmer, kodningsteori og mere. 

    XRT1 – XR Teknologier
    På dette kursus bliver du introduceret til forskellige XR-teknologier. Vi vil fokusere meget på forskellige XR Teknologier så som, Virtual Reality og du vil lære hvordan man kan bruge det i forskellige praktiske eksempler.

    DSB1 – Udvikling af databasesystemer
    Mange real-time applikationer bruger databaser til at gemme og finde objekter hurtigt. Her lærer du om metoder til at designe, implementere og drive enkeltbruger relationelle databaser samt at implementere CRUD-operationer fra .Net baserede applikationer. 

    GFX1 – Computergrafik 1
     Dette kursus vil introducere dig i hvordan et grafikkort fungerer og hvordan man kan få et grafikkort til at rendere 3D grafik. Den studerende vil blive introduceret til hvordan en traditionel Hardware Graphics Pipeline er sat sammen og hvordan GPUen og Video Memory fungerer på moderne grafikkort. Kurset vil også lære at implementere belysningsmodeller samt simple grafiske effekter i et high-level shadersprog. 

    DIS1 – Distribuerede systemer og sikkerhed
    Dette kursus lærer dig at analysere, designe, dokumentere og implementere et distribueret system herunder opnå forståelse for fordele og ulemper ved en distribueret arkitektur. 

    Multiplayer- og online spil kan være utrolig underholdende man de kan ikke implementeres uden en fundamental viden om netværk. På kurset opnår du grundlæggende forståelse for computernetværk, protokoller, sikkerhedsteknologier og kryptering i Internettet. Du bliver også introduceret til brugen af SignalR (web socket) med C# programmer. 

    ADS1 – Algoritmer og datastrukturer
    For at kunne udvikle effektive og hurtige real-time applikationer er det vigtigt at man forstår at anvende en computers hukommelse så effektivt som muligt. Her lærer du at designe, implementere og analysere forskellige algoritmer samt forskellige avancerede datastrukturer som er gearet til spil.

    CCP1 - (C++)
    Kurset introducerer programmeringssproget C++ (17). Dette sprog er kendt for dens kompleksitet samt hastighed og bliver derfor ofte brugt til at udvikle real-time applikationer så som 3D Software og Game Engines. Yderlig bliver sproget brugt i Unreal Engine og kurset er derfor også relevant for Gameplay programmører. Den studerende vil blive introduceret i hvordan man implementere grundlæggende kode, så som, løkker, arrays, funktioner, klasser, polymorphism, templates, pointers og references. Den studerende vil også blive introduceret til hvordan man mest effektivt debugger og tester kode. 

    STE1 – Storytelling
    Dette kursus udforsker storytelling fra et teknisk perspektiv, hvor vi undersøger hvordan man opbygger en meningsfyldt interaktiv fortælling. Der undervises i grundlæggende narratologi hvor du lærer at forstå og analysere fortællestrukturer og plots og du bliver i stand til at evaluere forskellige løsningsmodeller, samt designe og udvikle softwaresystemer som understøtter afviklingen af interaktive fortællinger. 

    GEN1 – Game Engine
    Kurset introducerer begrebet Game Engine. Vi vil historisk set kigge på hvordan Games Engines har udviklet sig gennem tiden og hvordan Games Engines i dag teknisk set fungerer på moderne hardware og hvordan vi kan bruge dem som udvikler. Vi vil diskutere hvad de kan bruges til og hvad mange af de populære Engines på markedet kan tilbyde. Vi vil også kigge på deres styrker og svagheder og hvorfor nogle spilfirmaer stadigvæk vælger at udvikle deres egne teknologier. 

    UEX1 – User Experience 
    I dette kursus udforsker unikke udfordringer og muligheder der opstår når man designer til Extended Reality. Traditionelle UX principper udvides med interaktive 3D miljøer med immersive interaktive kontekster. I kurset kigger vi på interaktionsdesign til XR/AR, ergonomi og principper fra kognitionspsykologien og testmetoder der kan være med til at sikre brugerne en optimal oplevelse.  

    De studerende vil prototype XR oplevelser og lave brugerstudier og tests, og vil derigennem blive i stand til at analysere, evaluere og designe optimale brugeroplevelser til XR-oplevelser. 

    Valgfag 
    GFX2 - Computergrafik 2
    Kurset tager over hvor GFX1 slap. Den studerende vil lære at implementere mere komplekse belysningsmodeller og kigge på koncepter så som Physical Based Shading, Deferred Rendering. Der vil også blive introduceret mere avancerede visuelle effekter for Real-Time grafik samt diskutere andre renderingsmetoder så som Raytracing. 

    PCO1 – Physical computing 
    MAL1 – Machine learning
    I dette kursus får du både teoretisk viden og praktiske færdigheder i anvendelsen af maskinlæringsmetoder til et spektrum af datatyper, der omfatter både strukturerede og ustrukturerede datasæt. Læreplanen er designet til at sikre, at du grundigt forstår og dygtigt kan udnytte avancerede værktøjer og teknikker, der er afgørende for dataforberedelse, forbehandling og udforskning. Du bliver rustet til at skelne underliggende strukturer og lave informerede forudsigelser. 

    AUD1 – Digital Audio
    Kurset vil introducere, hvordan et lydkort virker og grundlæggende hvordan lyd fungere på en computer samt gennemgå, hvordan lyd ofte bliver anvendt i spil og hvordan 3D lyd fungerer. Den studerende vil lære at implementere 3D lyd og hvordan forskellige effekter kan opnås ved brug af moderne hardware. 

    CAL1 - Calculus (Horsens) 
    Kurset giver dig viden om og praktisk erfaring med at anvende beregningsmetoder og -værktøjer. Vigtigst er det, at kurset gør det muligt for dig at anvende differentiel og integreret beregning til løsning af en bred vifte af problemer. 

    SMP1 - Stochastic Modelling and Processing 
    Den allestedsnærværende tilstedeværelse af usikkerhed og støj i ingeniørvidenskaben gør det obligatorisk at forstå og kvantificere tilfældige fænomener. For at nå dette mål vil kurset give en solid introduktion til teorien om stokastiske processer. Der lægges særlig vægt på applikationer, og den du vil modellere og analysere komplekse stokastiske situationer, som de opstår i praksis. Applikationerne inkluderer eksempler fra forskellige ingeniørområder såsom informationsteknologi og kommunikation, signalbehandling og mere. 

  • The programme consists of practice-oriented teaching with a mix of classroom lessons and project-oriented work. To the furthest extent possible, we plan the teaching, so that you learn theories through concrete assignments, tasks, cases and projects.

    During the programme, you will work on projects that are increasingly influenced by your own choices.

    Sustainability, digitalisation, innovation and entrepreneurship are central concepts at all of VIA’s engineering study programmes and are implemented in teaching, internships and projects throughout your education with us.

    Theory as well as practical classroom teaching

    The Software Technology Engineering Programme consists primarily of classroom teaching. Classes are based on project work with emphasis on problem-based learning. Your lessons vary between theory and practice. This means, that your will learn academic theories of engineering and how to transfer theories to practical tasks, projects, and cases. Project work takes place in teams.

    Each semester is concluded with a semester project in which students get to use the knowledge they gained from all semester courses in one assignment.

    Lab work is an important part of the programme

    Software Technology Engineering has an IoT lab as well as an XR-lab, making it possible to test multiple theories in practice. Exercises in the labs is an important part of the teaching at the programme.

    Company visits and collaboration

    At VIA, we educate engineers in close cooperation with businesses. Therefore, we organise company visits during your studies, at which you can meet fully trained Software Technology Engineers, who will introduce you to their workdays, tasks and the challenges they face during their workdays. By that, you will learn how different companies operate, what the day-to-day tasks are like for a Software Technology Engineer and what you can expect, when you finish your studies.

    In addition, you will meet guest lecturers from the industry, for example former students talking about their careers and work lives.

    At the fifth semester, you get to do an internship in an industry business, working along side their other employees and letting you practice your skills.

    Full time studies with preparation

    Be aware that the Software Technology Engineering programme is full time and requires an average of 40 hours of studying per week.

  • As a student at the Software Technology Engineering study programme, you will share an academic and social bond with your class as well as students from VIA’s other Engineering programmes.

    We have a tolerant study environment with young and more mature students from all walks of life. Expect to meet international students from all over the world, as well as Danish students seeking an international outlook on their education.

    Campus Horsens

    When you are not studying, there will be plenty of other things to do at campus. At VIA, we have a lot of different associations, which you are more than welcome to join.     Study start

    During the first days of your first semester, you will be introduced to your study programme and the study environment at your new campus. Study start is comprised of both academic introduction to your programme as well as social activities, where you get to know your fellow students. Furthermore, you will get an introduction to Campus Horsens and the city of Horsens.

    As a part of study start, you will meet your lecturers, student counsellors and tutors. They are all ready to answer your questions and tell you about your new study programme. An experienced student from the Software Technology Engineering programme will be assigned to you as your main tutor and help you settle in your new role as a student at VIA.

    Most of our programmes have study start in the end of August, but the final programme and dates will be announced at MyVIA, VIA’s portal for students. You will get access to the site if you are enrolled at one of our programmes.

     

    Som studerende på uddannelsen til softwareingeniør får du et fagligt fællesskab i din klasse og et rummeligt studiemiljø på uddannelsen med både yngre og lidt ældre studerende. 

    Der er mange foreninger i VIA, som du kan engagere dig i, der har både sociale, faglige og studenterpolitiske formål. Du kan også dyrke det sociale liv i fredagsbarer, til studenterfester eller en eftermiddag med brætspil.

    I løbet af studiestarten bliver du introduceret til både din uddannelse og livet på campus. Du får en faglig introduktion, møder dine medstuderende gennem forskellige aktiviteter og lærer, hvilke muligheder der findes på dit nye studiested.

    Undervejs møder du undervisere, studievejledere og mentorer, som står klar til at besvare dine spørgsmål og hjælpe dig godt i gang. De erfarne studerende fungerer som mentorer og støtter dig i at finde dig til rette i dit nye liv som studerende.

  • Living Costs

    You should expect average monthly living costs between DKK 5000 and 7000 (roughly 650 - 900 EUR), including accommodation. More about living costs in Denmark here!

    Financial support

    SU is a monthly grant provided to students by the Danish government. Provided that they fulfil a number of requirements, e.g. having a contract for 10-12 work hours per week, EU citizens may also be eligible for SU. More information about SU for foreign students and how to apply.

Internship

The Software Technology Engineering specialised in XR study programme includes a 20-week internship at the 5th semester. Here, you will get the chance to test the skills you have learnt at the programme in practice.

  • You can take your internship in a company or organisation of your choice. As software development is used in many industries and developers are generally in high demand, you are able to find internship placements in most industries depending on your interests.

    In the internship, you get to test your engineering skills as well as skills in e.g. communication, time- and project management, innovation, teamwork and last, but not least, get an understanding of what it is like for a software engineer to be a part of a work place.

  • During your internship, you will solve assignments and tasks at equal footing with other employees. You will usually be paired with an experienced colleague, who can provide professional guidance and support and you will also be assigned an internship supervisor from VIA.

    As you build your skill set, you will typically gain more and more responsibility for your own projects and assignments.

    Finances during your internship

    Your host is not required to pay a salary, but some chose to do so anyway. If you are not paid and you are eligible for SU, you continue to get this during your internship.

  • You are responsible for finding an internship host yourself. However, you will get support from VIA for the process.

    We work closely with local businesses in Horsens, but have contacts all over Denmark. In addition, VIA's Career Centre is also able to help you with contacts in Danish companies as well as companies abroad if you want to take your internship in another country. They are also able to assist you with your CV and provide support in the application process.

    If you are planning to live and work in Denmark after graduation, we recommend that you take your internship here, as you will get to build your network and get relevant experience from a Danish workplace.

    Du har som softwareingeniør gode jobmuligheder både i Danmark og i udlandet. Rigtig mange brancher efterlyser ingeniører, derfor er du som softwareingeniør en eftertragtet arbejdskraft.

    Du kan finde karriereveje i alle typer af private og offentlige virksomheder. Dimittender har fx fundet arbejde i virksomheder som arbejder med energi og vindmøller eller i medievirksomheder og hos tele- og mobiloperatører. Du kan desuden finde job, hvor du beskæftiger dig med udvikling af eller rådgivning om it-systemer i samarbejde med programmører og dataloger.  


    Fremtidige arbejdsopgaver
    Som softwareingeniør med speciale i XR kan du arbejde i softwarevirksomheder med udvikling af applikationer, i spilfirmaer med udvikling af spil eller XR-applikationer og i alle typer af virksomheder, som arbejder med udvikling af XR. Du kan også arbejde med udvikling af simulationer, der kan hjælpe andre.

    Du kan eksempelvis ende i stillinger som følgende: 

    Extended Reality Developer 
    Game Developer 
    Design/Graphics Engineer 

  • After a successfully completed programme, you have the option of pursuing further education, for example a Master’s degree in civil engineering in Denmark or abroad.

  • The Career Centre at VIA's Campus Horsens offers a range of career services to students. You can book a counselling session for advice on how to write a great CV or cover letter, updating your LinkedIn profile or how to look for jobs and internships in Denmark. 

    The Career Center regularly organises events and workshops where you can meet company representatives face-to-face in order to find a job, internship, project work or a full-time job related to your field of study.
